Upholstered Furniture Odor
Remove Odor from Upholstered Furniture With Nok-Out
Maybe it is an old sofa you got from Grandma – and it smells musty. Or maybe there are pet issues on your sofa – that darned dog! Of maybe your kid got sick on the sectional. No matter what the odor, Nok-Out can make it easy to get rid of upholstered furniture odor. Here’s how.
First – Understand How Nok-Out Works
As a genuine odor eliminator, Nok-Out permanently removes odors from anything stinky it comes into direct contact with. So if that sofa smells bad enough that the entire TV room stinks, it won’t do much good to spray the air – that’s not where the odor source is. Instead, use your nose and pin down the exact location of the odor source. For a pet or child accident, that is easy, you likely know exactly where the stink is on that sofa.
Test for colorfastness using a soft white cloth. Wrap it around your finger and wet the tip. Rub that wet spot in an inconspicuous place for about 10 seconds and see if there has been any color transfer. If not, you can safely spray Nok-Out. Where possible, spray directly on the odor source with an even coat. In most cases, it does not need to be drenched. Allow it to air dry and it wouldn’t hurt to put a fan on it to speed the drying. For most things, this will be sufficient to completely get rid of upholstered furniture odor.
What if I Can’t Find the Odor Source?
This is not uncommon – especially with Musty odors. Musty odor comes from a fungus and in most cases, that fungus is invisible because it is growing deep inside the stuffing. Very common for Grandma’s old sofa! Remember that Nok-Out must come into direct contact with that odor source and if it is a fungus growing deep in all that old stuffing, then you need to take a different approach. In order to get rid of odor where you can’t locate the source, you’ll need to spray the entire sofa. Hopefully that odor source will be on the surface and a superficial spraying of the entire thing will be enough to remove the odor form the furniture.
If, however, the odor returns after a few days, then the odor source is deeper down and you will need to spray more heavily and try to get Nok-Out to penetrate deeply and come in contact with all the odor source. First, dilute some Nok-Out by 3 parts water to one part Nok-Out – mix well. Start spraying the furniture. Your goal is to spray enough that your dilute mix will penetrate deeply. You may have to spray quite heavily to achieve this. (Spraying may be easiest if you are using a pump-up sprayer. Squeeze-trigger sprayers can wear you out!) It may take a longish time for the furniture to dry thoroughly. In my case, it took almost a week. Your TV room may smell a bit like a swimming pool during this drying time. Wait until it has thoroughly dried and then give it the nose test. If odor returns after a few days – you didn’t get Nok-Out to come in contact with all the stinky stuff and you’ll need to try again. Don’t give up too soon! Nok-Out works and can help you get rid of odor in your furniture successfully! But it does have to come in contact with all the stinky stuff to be able to do it’s work.
What About a Leather Sofa?
Nok-Out works fine with leather upholstery. Do test thoroughly to make sure the leather is colorfast! We also recommend that you dilute by 3 water to one Nok-Out when treating leather. Rather than get it all in one go, think that you are going to remove that odor incrementally – a little at a time until the odor is all gone. You may find it easiest to spray a cloth until it is damp and use that cloth to wipe down the leather. For a fuller treatment plan, here’s an article on how to get rid of odor in a leather sofa.
